WATERTON LAKES DARK SKY PRESERVE

National Park Film Script

I grew up in Alberta’s northern boreal forests, where the night sky was either full of stars, falling snow, or the northern lights. And so, it was a genuine joy to be invited to work on this animated film — which now runs on a loop at the Waterton Lakes National Park visitor centre — explaining the importance of the night sky to the plants and creatures that are most vibrant or active under starry skies.

I scripted the beginning narration that sets the stage for a segment of constellation lore — the “Star People Stories”, written and narrated by members of the Blackfoot Confederacy — and the ending, which invites everyone to visit the park at night to stargaze.

Waterton Lakes is one half of a cross-border International Dark Sky Park for having "exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, or public enjoyment."
